SISTERS

An art form that blends fashion, performance, politics, and sexuality to playfully disrupt normative gender performance, drag is informed by how gender has been enforced and expanded in the artists’ personal lives and surrounding communities. In Utah, the influence of this cultural phenomenon and a thriving queer community in the state’s capital has contributed to a flourishing drag scene in Salt Lake City where Friday night shows and Sunday morning brunch happen every weekend at local gay bars and clubs.

Made possible by the drag queens, kings, and things who welcomed me into their homes, SISTERS honors my new friends, documenting their gender performance as a fluid and defiant creative act in a heteronormative religious and social culture. It is my hope that through the photographs, research, and relationships born from this project, I am able to share the drag scene in Utah with new audiences who will become supporters of this transformative sisterhood.
